Author WILL HUTCHISON

Passionate, riveting, impeccable, and meticulous research, those are words used to describe the works of Will Hutchison.

Hutchison came onto the scene in 2007 with his award-winning debut Follow Me to Glory, a novel of courage and adventure set in the Crimean War of the mid-nineteenth century.

Hutchison always knew he wanted to become a writer.  But, his first profession was spent serving his country, primarily in law enforcement, in the military and as a federal agent. Born in New York State, raised and educated in Syracuse, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps at a young age.  After a tour in Japan, he returned to his studies and graduated from Syracuse University with a degree in philosophy.  At that time, he abandoned his pursuit of a law degree, and joined a private investigation firm, until he reenlisted in the Marines for a tour of duty in Viet Nam. While on Christmas leave from the military, he met Rosemary and they were married in May.  He spent the rest of his military career in the U.S. Army, working as an undercover drug agent in Europe, and later directed the U.S. Army Criminal Investigations narcotics program. Hutchison finished his career serving as a Federal special agent, conducting fraud investigations and counter-terrorism initiatives involving nuclear plants.

In 2003, he admitted to Rosemary that his true aspiration was to be a writer. With her support and encouragement he began work on the manuscript that would eventually become the award-winning Follow Me to Glory. It is a novel that grapples with the coming of age of a young Scotsman, Ian Carlyle, whilst thrown into a catastrophic war. Young Ian is compelled to fulfill his destiny to lead men into battle and to have them “follow him to glory.”

While doing research in the United Kingdom and the Ukraine, for that novel, he discovered that an all-inclusive photographic record of surviving Crimean War artefacts used by the British soldier did not exist. Moreover, many artefacts were deteriorating and should be captured in photographs for future generations. This set of circumstances led Hutchison to a photography project that culminated in the critically acclaimed non-fiction book Crimean Memories: Artefacts of the Crimean War.  The book is illustrated brilliantly with colour photographs, many of which have not been published previously.  Historians agree the book meets the high academic standards required to study the uniforms, equipage, and other artefacts of the period.  Two friends, Michael Vice and B.J. Small, joined him on this project.

Hutchison has just completed the sequel to Follow Me to Glory – The Gettysburg Conspiracy. Ian Carlyle, now a seasoned officer, is brought into the American Civil War as an observer for Her Majesty, Queen Victoria.  Forced against his will to become entangled in a plot to assassinate Abraham Lincoln, he must find a way to foil the plot and protect his family’s name. His adventures take him through battles, romance, and political intrigue to the brink of his own destruction in a small Pennsylvania town named Gettysburg.

Will Hutchison is a sought-after international lecturer, on both the American Civil War and the Crimean War.  He is considered an authority on military history, and has collaborated on several historical films and events.  His writings and photographs have been featured in technical and historical journals, books, and other publications; his photography has been successfully shown and sold in galleries and private presentations.  When not writing he can usually be found doing research for his books or horseback riding around the countryside.  He is currently at work on a new Ian Carlisle novel.  He sincerely thanks all those friends and loyal readers who have encouraged him to continue the series. Hutchison continues to reside in Gettysburg with his wife and Shetland sheepdog, Robbie.
